We’ve been working on an easier, more enjoyable way to add books to your shelf, write reviews, add ratings, find similar books and so much more.
What’s New!
Easy Add
Just click the blue “Add” button that appears beneath each book and it will be added to your shelf.
Easy Edit
Once you've added a book to your shelf, you'll see a green “Edit” button beneath your book. Clicking Edit will display a window where you can do all that fun Shelfari stuff (reviews, ratings, tags, categorizing, etc). We've moved some features from the book page into this window so you'll be able to do everything you want with your books from anywhere on the site.
The Edit window allows you to personalize:
My Status – We’ll help you put your book on the right list (I’m Reading, Planning to Read, I’ve Read), ask members “Should I read this?”, mark the book as private, or remove it from your shelf.
My Opinion – You can add a rating, review or mark a book as a favorite.
My Edition – Tell your friends which books you own and which ones are on your wish list. You can also add notes and keep track of who borrowed your book.
My Tags – Add as many tags as you want to your book. Tags are a great way to organize your shelf and help you find similar books. Choose from suggested tags or your personal tags.
More to Do – You can recommend books to your friends, begin a discussion, read reviews or add the book to your group shelf. We’ve also added a list of books you might enjoy — you can add them right to your shelf.
You can close the Edit window by clicking “Done” (on More to Do) or by clicking the “X” in the top right.
If you want to quickly add a book to a specific list, you can still use the drop-down menu beside the add/edit button — just click to select the list you want (I’m Reading, Favorite, etc.).
More about adding & editing your books
Improved Shelf Pop-up
The shelf pop-up that appeared when you moused over a book is now smaller and disappears immediately when you move your mouse off of the book cover. This popup shows your review, rating, which list the book is on (I’m Reading, Favorite) and what other friends and members have read the book (and their rating). If you want to ask “Should I read this”, add tags or a review, simply click the Edit button beneath the book.
New FAQ
The answers to your questions are just a click away! The 'Help' menu in the upper-right corner of Shelfari will take you to our Frequently Asked Questions section. Select a topic from the drop down menu and then click on the question that you have. You will see your answer instantly appear.
Enjoy!

This change has made this site less fun and more complicated. Much more of this and I'm going to have to switch to a different site.

ALTHOUGH I LIKE SOME OF THE NEW CHANGES BUT THERE IS SAY "OLD IS GOLD"....THIS MEANS THAT I AM NOT LIKING ALL THE NEW CHANGE....
Posted by: KRISHNA | March 14, 2009 at 03:10 AM
I'm not impressed so far. Changes take too long to appear. I've been trying to move a book from "Reading" to "Read" status for several days and now it appears on both lists (and yes, I've cleared the "Reading" box - many times. I've even removed the book completely, and it's still there, and wrong.) I also couldn't get "Search" to actually search for anything.

While the new look in the options look pretty nifty, I found the arrow beside the "edit" option a little frustrating. The pop up doesn't seem to want to stick around even when the cursor is on it. Then when I clicked "reading this", the whole book was taken off my shelf. I had to go back to the book's page and add it again.
Maybe it needs a little getting used to, but I've had a bad start with it.

I'd like to reiterate what Memlingsangel says above. It's currently impossible to remove a book from "I'm reading". If you "unclick" that option either (via the Edit button or the little drop-down arrow), the book appears to go grey and disappear from the shelf, but when you go back a minute later it's still there. As a result, I now have 3 books in "I'm reading" where there should only be one. It'd be great if you could fix this. Otherwise, I actually do like the new visuals.

When you just click "Add" without selecting Planned/Reading/Read, where does the book go?
I liked the old way better, actually. I could put the book on the shelf I wanted, rate it, and set the read date quickly. The same actions now take longer with the new layout. :(
I also liked the "move to I've read" option; now, that workflow is more difficult.

Hi Asma,
Thanks for letting us know. Have you had any problems moving other books using the drop down menu next to the Edit button? If so, feel free to email me the title info (feedback@shelfari.com). Thanks!

Hi Stefan,
If you refresh the page, do your books show on the correct shelf?
Posted by: Shelfari | March 16, 2009 at 01:32 PM
Hi Arthaey,
When you click "Add" the book is added to your All Books list. You can Edit the book as soon as it's added and customize the list(s) it appears on, add tags, reviews, etc... or you can click the drop down menu on the right side of the Edit button to add the book directly to a list (similar to the old menu button). Thanks for the feedback!

Very Nice Improvement...

I find the new search function cumberson and unhelpful and am not happy with the other changes made. I wish you had left things alone.

In response to the question "If you refresh the page, do your books show on the correct shelf?": the answer is no. If I uncheck "I am reading now", the book turns gray (as if removed from the shelf), but if I refresh the screen or go to that part of my shelf, the book is still there. As a result, I now have 3 books under "I'm reading now" because I have been unable to remove 2 of them.

l have liked the new look and changes since it all began a few months ago, its pretty but from all the comments above, l am not sure the recent change will be effective. However, l'd try it out and see. l'd however like to be able to add books to my groups' bookshelves from my shelf. Can that be possible?

Hi guys! I'm quite new to Shelfari and so far I'm impressed. I like the easy edit part too so you guys are doing a great job. If I may suggest, about the ownership of the books, could you add "borrowed it" to the status?

You have a tiny flaw here:

It looks like my account was deleted. I have been having problems signing in because it says I need to enable cookies. I've done that, but I still couldn't log in. When I tried to search for my acct, or said I forgot my password, I don't even get an e-mail anymore, which makes it appear as though my account has been deleted. Could you please help me with this? I have left several messages with no reply.

@Carey. I've responded directly to your email, we should be able to get you back into your account.

@CJ. Thanks for the suggestion! Are you wanting to mark books that you've borrowed or books that you've loaned out to someone?
Posted by: Shelfari | March 18, 2009 at 01:57 PM
@UsabilityThoughts. The image is cut off, I can only guess what the problem is. Do you have a larger image? Thanks!

@Rasheedat Akanmu. You can add a book to your group shelf from the Edit window's 'More to Do' section (or from the book page).

I tried to delete a duplicate book from my shelf and it keeps popping back up. I also find it harder to move a book to I've read shelf.

The pagination comes on top of the tooltip. I guess it's a z-index thingy.

I've tried to delete my whole book shelf to
start over for new year. One problem, all the books are still there, after clicking remove from shelf. What's up? how long do changes take before they go into effect?
